Political spending in American politics is reaching record-breaking heights:
In 2022, first quarter federal lobbying spending blew past $1 billion for the first time ever in a single quarter and again in 2023 for a second year in a row
By the end of 2022, federal lobbying spending reached $4.1 billion — the highest since 2010.
Almost $3.9 billion was spent on lobbying in state capitals during the two-year period from 2021 and 2022, and $429 million was spent so far in 2023.
As political spending breaks records, it’s more important than ever for journalists to dig deep and keep Americans informed about money in politics at the state and federal levels.
