Reigning Olympic champion Sofia Goggia continued her supreme downhill form by following up Friday’s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup win at Crans Montana with another Saturday victory at the same resort to extend her discipline lead. Here is all you need to know:
– Goggia came into the weekend with victories in Val-d’Isère and St. Anton, while Ester Ledecká had a Val-d’Isère Super G victory to her name as well as a parallel giant slalom snowboard win in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
– With Austrian Tamara Tippler and Swiss Michelle Gisin unable to put down fast runs first out of the gate in Switzerland on Friday, Czech star Ledecká charged down the slope to take the lead with a time of 1m10.30s.
– Home hope Corinne Suter could not do any better, however Goggia put together another masterclass to finish 0.2s ahead of Ledecká with American Breezy Johnson edging out Slovak Petra Vlhova for third place.
– On Saturday, Ledecká managed to walk away from a bad crash seventh down the mountain with Goggia posting a brilliant 1:27.75 time ninth out the gate.
– Swiss hope Lara Gut-Behrami pushed Goggia close with an excellent run, however she had to settle for second 0.27s behind with Italian Elena Curtoni third.
– Goggia now leads the downhill standings by 195 points over Johnson with Ledecká fourth, while the Italian moved up two places in the overall standings to third place – 207 points behind leader Vlhova with just Sunday’s Super G contest left to race.
