I will miss Mandarin Oriental. The white gloved valet, Mandarin Bar, and MOZen Bistro are favorites of mine. In case you missed it, I reviewed Mandarin Bar back in November of 2010 (read my review). MOZen Bistro will become Zen Kitchen, a day restaurant with Asian dishes and a weekend brunch. Mandarin Bar will become SkyBar, however, we still don’t know the fate of Twist end of year. It’s troubling Las Vegas has such trouble retaining and supporting these brands. Not long ago the Ritz-Carlton closed, thereafter Lowe’s as well. Rather than have one offering, why not have Mandarin Oriental, the Ritz-Carlton, a Peninsula, AND the Waldorf Astoria! I also wonder if Waldorf Astoria will offer Driving Experiences in Las Vegas? Who wouldn’t want to drive a Ferrari 458 Italia Spider, McLaren MP4-12C, or Porsche 911 Turbo as a part of their stay? Want to know more about Waldorf Driving experiences? I wrote about it back in May (read more).
It’s a relief a property as prestigious as the Waldorf Astoria has moved in.
The sale of Mandarin, which occupies prime real estate along Las Vegas Boulevard in front of Aria, to an undisclosed buyer for about $214 million was announced April 26. Mandarin Oriental officials were then told their lease on the 392-room hotel would not be renewed.
Hilton, owner of the Waldorf-Astoria, announced May 16 that the non-gambling hotel would become a Waldorf. Hotel Management reported that a “$50-million renovation [would] accompany the change in ownership.” Hilton would not confirm that figure.
“Waldorf brand enhancements will begin this summer,” a Hilton statement said, noting that the changes would be “gradually implemented as to not impact the guestwork during that pecaate of the Mandarin’s Tea Lounge and Twist restaurant, both of which have stunning views of the Strip from the tower’s 23rd floor.
A publicist for Waldorf-Astoria said only that those public spaces would be used for “innovative dining concepts.”
